There are many different designs and colours of designer fashion hand knit woollen cardigans today - and all made even more distinctive by the type of wool used in the knitting process. A visit to any of the woollen craft shops will be testimony to this fact... and what a practical and extreme;y useful garment they prove to be.
It may be of interest to you to learn that the popular item of clothing known as the cardigan, took its name from the Earl of Cardigan over 150 years ago! It was when the 7th Earl of Cardigan, one James Thomas Brudenell, was fighting in the Crimea War in 1854, that the cardigan's origin came about.
He was the man who gave the order for the famous 'Charge of the Light Brigade' and was known for his courage, bravery and achievements in war. To combat the cold Crimean winter, the Earl of Cardigan wore a knitted woollen vest under his uniform - and it was this item of knitwear that we know today as the cardigan.
